Year 5 were very lucky to have a yoga session this week as part of our anti-bullying activities. They practised calming moves and stretches.
We Remember Our Soldiers
Today, everyone in school took part in a two minute silence to remember the soldiers who fought for us. On behalf of the whole school, Class 5 and 6 then visited the cenotaph to lay a wreath. We read the poem, ‘In Flanders Field’ and we said a prayer. All of the children were so respectful and everyone enjoyed taking the wreaths to show respect for the soldiers in our community and all those fighting now.
Exploring the universe!
In Class 5 science this week we have been exploring the Earth! We looked at different scientific evidence relating to the shape of the Earth and proved that sometimes our eyes can be fooled (using a science trick that “bends” pencils using water).
We then compared the sizes of the Earth, sun and moon. We found that if Earth was the size of a pea then the sun would be a football and the moon a peppercorn! We measured out the scale distance and found that the Earth and moon would be 2.5cm away then the sun would be 9.3m away from them! In the photo the Earth and moon are on the white paper at the top of the image.
Estimation!
This week in Maths we have been estimating. To do this we have been rounding numbers to come up with an approximate answer.
We’ve also been using reasoning to explain our estimates. We used this to estimate answers to lots of questions (the amount of water bottles in Class 5 created some interesting answers!)
Making the most of maths!
In Class 5 this week we’ve been looking at missing number problems for addition and subtraction. We used our place value grids to help us work out what the missing numbers were. Solving puzzles is a great way to practice maths!
Earlier this week we had a visit from Destination Judo. We had a chance to try out some basic judo moves whilst learning from an instructor. It was a great start to our week!
Class 5 Scientists!
We’ve been learning about plants in a practical lesson this week!
Earlier in the week we had a lesson about the parts that make up flowering plants. Today we dissected lilies to identify the individual components using real flowers. We all loved our practical lesson (and our classroom smelt fantastic!).
We’ve had a great time doing maths in Class 5!
We’ve been using our place value counters to represent numbers. We can also use the counters to change the numbers and focus on our key skills, such as rounding and counting forwards/backwards.
Terrific Tudors
In Class 5, we have been working hard and learning all about the Tudors. We have made some fantastic Tudor roses in art this week. What a fantastic start to Year 5!
Investigating gravity in science
We have been researching the famous scientist, Isaac Newton this week, as we try to understand the force of gravity. We had great fun weighing different objects to compare their mass and weight.
We discovered that reading scales can be tricky!
We dressed up as our favourite characters too!
