Today we had a discussion about Deaf Awareness Week. We learnt to spell our names in British Sign Language.
Hockey
Class 5 and Class 6 took part in a fun PE lesson today about hockey. We learned how to stop a ball and how to perform a push pass. We’re looking forward to building our skills over the coming weeks to use in a game situation.
Earth Hour
Today Class 5 and Class 6 took part in Earth Hour. We learned about the impacts of climate change and the simple everyday changes we can make to help cut greenhouse gas emissions. We played a game to help us think about ways to save electricity and we also made model houses that were covered in key climate change messages.

Fairtrade Fortnight
As it is Fairtrade Fortnight, Class 5 have been looking at the reasons and impact of buying Fairtrade products. We demonstrated how consumer power can influence Fairtrade by sampling Fairtrade chocolate.
Reaching for the stars!
Today in Class 5, we have been looking at stars. We have studied what they are made of and watched a practical demonstration about how stars burn. Then we used sweets to model the constellations!
Design and Technology Project – Trap Building
This week, Class 5 and Class 6 have been taking part in a design project to design and build a humane animal trap. We evaluated existing traps, designed our own traps using a design brief and then built them from recyclable materials. We had a lot of fun designing and building our traps!
Children’s Mental Health Week
To mark Children’s Mental Health Week, we had a whole class discussion about how to look after our mental health. The focus this year is “Healthy: Inside and Out”. We designed “mind fruit”, a special fruit that has positive impacts on our mental health.
Safer Internet Assembly
Class 5 would like to thank all of the visitors who came to watch our contribution to the safer internet day assembly. We have been busting jargon in Class 5 and we made posters to show what key words are and their definitions. We enjoyed sharing our learning so that everyone has a better understanding of key internet safety terms.
Recycling advice
Today we had an important visitor in school. Our visitor works for Durham County Council and he came to talk to us about the importance of recycling correctly. We discovered that the recycling we throw away can often be reused to save energy and help our environment. We are going to make sure to share our learning with everyone at home so we can check that we are recycling correctly.
